RAG - Raise and Give

Fundraising

This is the boring bit - the regulations, the forms, the nitty gritty!

This page should answer all of your questions on how to successfully raise money for charity through RAG.

The basic stuff: (more details below)

- Anyone can fundraise - you can fundraise as an individual or clubs and societies can fundraise, or you can help us with our fundraising!

- All charity events on campus need to be approved by RAG, as does any money raised on campus.

Why?

- Because SUSU is a charity, neither itself nor it's affiliated clubs and societies can donate money to other charities. This is where RAG comes in, we are the union's fundraising department, making it possible for fundraising to take place! And as a result money can only be donated to charity from collections and events through us. (To do otherwise is against the law!)

So you want to fundraise, how do you do it?

- Fill out an events form available from the student's activities office (By the squash courts in the student's union building)

- Or e-mail us with your proposal (rag@susu.org)

Any other regulations?

- We normally ask students to fill out events forms (Available from the activities office- by the squash courts in the main union bulding) or to email us (rag@susu.org

- As there is a huge amount of fundraising to be done throughout the union, we generally ask for 4 weeks notice of events so that we can effectively plan events!

- Along with getting RAG's approval for events, you'll also need to book the appropriate space in the union, by contacting marketing - luke@susu.org . You may also need to contact events - D.Low@soton.ac.uk

- If fundraising for a charity other than the RAG nominated ones, you'll need the charity registration number.

- As RAG is a student's union department we generally give priority to any SUSU affiliated clubs. This is not to say outside charities cannot fundraise on campus, just priority must go to those SUSU clubs.

I want to fundraise but for my club, not for charity, do I need RAG?

If you are fundraising only for your club and not for charity, you don't need RAG, however you need to make it clear it is raising funds for your club and not for charity!

But I don't want to fundraise on campus, do I need RAG?

There is nothing to stop you from donating individually if you fundraise outside of the Students' Union, however you then cannot advertise or sell tickets on campus without our approval.

What are the benefits of fundraising through RAG?

Although having to run your events through RAG can seem like a hassle, there are plenty of reasons why it's a positive move.

Advertising:  RAG can advertise for free in the Wessex Scene, SUSU.org and The Guide, as well as our website.  If your event is large enough, we can also provide people to put up posters/hand out flyers for you, and can even involve SUSU.tv or SURGE!

Venue:  If you're organising a large event, RAG can help you secure The Cube or The Bridge as a venue, allowing you to make the most of SUSU's fantastic events equipment and technical staff.

Ideas:  The main aim of the RAG department is simply to raise money!  We've been doing it for years, and while we have a wealth of fantastic ideas up our sleeves, we also know what makes a successful event and what unfortunately won't work.

Planning:  We can help at every step of the way from arranging initial meetings with the appropariate SUSU staff, to helping organise costs of your event.

Manpower:  Our members love nothing more than helping to run a successful event, be it promoting it in advance, helping out on the day or cleaning up afterwards!  We're here to make things easier for you, so if you need any extra manpower then we can provide it!

How do I get started?

For more information on organising your own charity event, or to get started right away, email Lucy Campion or Becky Maclean, Events Co-ordinators, at rag@susu.org or pick up an Events Form from the Student Activities Office.  We look forward to hearing from you!
